The idea for the dam in Malampuzha region to boost agriculture, began from 10's of the 20th century. Malampuzha Irrigation Project is the first large-scale irrigation system tried in Kerala. This project, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha to irrigate the area of the river Malampuzha, 21245 hectares and consists of a construction dam through a network of canal systems. Dam is a saddle and a mason of straight gravity type of soil. The length of the portion of the masonry part 1,626.71 meters and the soil is 222.20 meters. The capacity of the reservoir is full reservoir level (FRL) + 115.06 in meters and 22 square kilometers 226 mm3 in the water spread area of the maximum height of the masonry dam is 38.10 meters (125 feet). There is a network of 2 canal system to provide the 42,090 hectares of the dam of the reservoir. In 2005, large-scale renovation work began in Malampuzha Gardens as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations. Re-paint the dam, a huge LED Hoarding was placed on top of the dam.
